Pamela Bell - Keynote Speaker

Pamela Bell is the Chief Everything Officer at the New Zealand Institute of Building. She is also an Innovation Consultant and Board Director for a range of start-ups, Council controlled entities and commercial organisations in the built environment. Recently she became Chair of the NZ Construction Industry Council (NZCIC).

Pamela is passionate about innovative construction, affordable housing, and added-value timber. She has subject matter expertise in offsite manufacturing, design-thinking approaches, dynamic strategy, and future-focused governance.

Her diverse background spans:

  • Olympic-level sport (snowboard giant slalom in Nagano, Japan),
  • architecture research and writing (‘Kiwi Prefab’ book + exhibition),
  • business entrepreneurship (PrefabNZ, Fruition Apparel + NZ Snowboard Academy),
  • and governance (including Urban Plus, Seaview Marina, Abodo Wood, ConCOVE + BRANZ).

Pamela founded the peak body for innovative construction, PrefabNZ, in 2010 from her Master of Architecture thesis Kiwi Prefab which was also turned into a book and museum exhibition. She handed over the reins in 2019 when offsite construction reached a tipping point of awareness for central government, the construction industry, and the public alike.

Pamela has been the lucky recipient of several awards including the Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) Alumni Award (2019). As an Adjunct Professor at VUW she investigated the relationship between design thinking and business. She is also interested in the interface between design thinking and governance for the boardroom with a series of articles and interactive workshops for the New Zealand Institute of Directors.

Kieran Read - Special Guest

Kieran spent 15 years playing professional rugby in New Zealand and Japan before retiring in 2021. 

Playing over 150 games for the Crusaders and 127 tests for All Blacks.  A 4-time super rugby and 2 times Rugby World Cup winner, he captained both the Crusaders and All Blacks for long periods, becoming the second most capped All Black captain of all time with 52 tests. 

Kieran has completed an applied management degree and a diploma of sport and exercise science.  With a passion for leadership and helping others improve, rugby has given Kieran ultimate lessons and learning opportunities in the leadership space.  Working in a high-performance team, being involved in establishing team culture and performing under pressure to name a few. 

Kieran now passes on these lessons through his business, Kieran Read Leadership.

Benjy Simmons - Starke

Benjy is the Technical Lead at STARKE Building Performance Facades, specializing in windows, doors, and facades and how they meet the code.

Passionate about building performance and code compliance, Benjy sits on the Window and Glass Association Technical Committee.

Over the past few years, Benjy has led STARKE's technical efforts during a transformative period for the industry, shaping how we think about windows and doors.

Henry McIntyre - Panelist

Henry McIntyre is in his third and final year studying a Bachelor of Building Science Majoring in Project Management and Sustainable Engineering Systems at Victoria University.

Henry has experience in both commercial and residential construction, as well as consultancy project management which has really helped his studies.

Outside of university, he finds joy in hunting, fishing, four-wheel driving, cricket and socialising with mates.

Henry will participate in a panel Q&A with Kieran Read after his presentation.

Wafaey Swelim - Qorox

Wafaey Swelim is the founder and director of the New Zealand’s first 3D printing concrete company, Qorox 3D.
Born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, Wafaey has a B.Sc in Architectural Engineering from Cairo University.
He has over 20 years experience in the construction industry and has worked and lived in four countries, finally settling in New Zealand in 2015.
In 2018 Wafaey started to pursue his passion for innovative construction technology and started XD Innovations which is the R&D arm of the business.
QOROX is the result of 2 years of R&D, design work, testing and product development both in NZ and the Netherlands.

Chris Phayer - NZIBS Living Legend

 Chris Phayer has a BSc (Hons) Degree in Building Surveying from Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool John Moores University) and has been a Chartered Building Surveyor since 1987.

He migrated to NZ (1994) and has been a Registered member of NZIBS since 2003, when he was appointed as a Weathertight Homes Resolution Service assessor. He has previously served on the RICS NZ National Committee (2004-2010) and the NZIBS Executive Committee (2008-2010) and was appointed to the MOE National Weathertightness Review Panel in 2018.   

He has been the company director of SolveIT Building Surveyors for over 10 years.

 

Dianne Johnson - NZIBS Living Legend

Dianne Johnson, one of the first female members has been a member and past executive of NZIBS for over 20 years. She has also been a member of Women in Construction, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Resolution Institute and the Society of Construction Law and sat on the Building Practitioners Board. 
Dianne has also provided technical and subject-matter training to a wide-range of professionals in the building sector. 

William Hursthouse - NZIBS Living Legend

William Hursthouse is a Life member of NZIBS who joined the institute in 1997.

William lectures Core Module 1 “Introduction to Building Law and Regulations” and Core Module 4 “Condition and Compliance Reporting”  that form part of the Certificate in Residential Property Inspections, one of three papers that make up the NZIBS Diploma in Building Surveying.

Don Frame - NZIBS Living Legend

Donald Frame, has been a long-time member of NZIBS since July 1995! With over 70 years of experience running his business, House Care Limited, Don is an invaluable resource in the industry. His extensive knowledge and expertise are unmatched, making him a highly respected figure within the building industry.

In addition to his entrepreneurial success, Don shares his insights and experiences through his dedicated segment in the NZIBS Publication, "The Journal," where he recounts significant and interesting anecdotes from his remarkable career.

Scott Matthews - Easy Build Homes

Scott Matthews joined EasyBuild in 2020 with the aim of supporting Easy Build’s continued growth around New Zealand. Since joining EasyBuild Scott has set up and grown the EasyBuild factory, doubling production space within one year to support their continued growth, and grown their licensee network substantially, making EasyBuild’s warm, energy efficient homes available in more regions across Aotearoa.

Scott spearheads EasyBuild’s social housing strategy and facilitates engagement, providing invaluable support to their licensees throughout New Zealand on pivotal projects. Additionally, he nurtures their growth by assisting them in operating their businesses with professionalism and efficiency.

Previously, Scott led Master Build Services, which manages Master Build Guarantees. Scott achieved considerable growth during his three years at Master Build Services by successfully engaging with the membership and developing new products and services.

Prior to this he spent seven years as Head of Shared Services at NZ customer owned bank, The Co-operative Bank, giving Scott extensive experience in risk, finance and operations.

Dave Brunsdon - Kestrel Group

In 2022 Dave was awarded the accolade of Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to both engineering and emergency management.

Dave has led many initiatives for the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE) and the Structural Engineering Society of New Zealand (SESOC), including the development of technical guidance and regulatory provisions for the seismic assessment of existing buildings.

He led the development and implementation of national procedures for managing buildings in an emergency, which have been applied following various natural disasters since 2007, several under his operational leadership. 

He currently provides strategic seismic advice to a range of government agencies and local councils, including Health New Zealand, the Ministry of Education and FENZ.

Todd Lindsay - Comfortech

Todd Lindsay has worked in a range of sales and technical roles with companies such as James Hardie, Sika, NZF Stainless, and Kingspan Insulation. In early 2023, Todd joined Comfortech® as the Building Performance and Technical Manager, with a focus on understanding and developing solutions to meet the new H1 Building Code changes.

Join Todd Lindsay as he presents an overview of traditional, more recently adopted, and emerging solutions in insulation, coupled with a broader look at the challenges we face to achieve better performing homes.

He will touch on the debate around delivering better performing homes, while balancing affordability and a future that calculates embodied and operational carbon in insulation and other materials.

Sam Archer - Green Star

Sam Archer is a Sustainability Consultant and Mechanical Engineer with over 18 years experience in the Construction industry.

As Director Market Transformation at the New Zealand Green Building Council, he is responsible for running the sustainability energy assessment tools – Green Star, Homestar and NABERSNZ.

He has a passion for sustainability housing having spent 6 years creating and managing the sustainability framework for a 3000 home development for the University of Cambridge. 

Sam also has extensive experience in sustainability and energy strategies, including carbon policy work for the UK government, sustainable urban design and low energy and passive building design.
