Conference Overview

"Keeping Connected" is the NZIBS Annual Conference theme for 2023.

We have an outstanding lineup of speakers, with the keynote address being delivered by Nelson Mayor, the Hon Dr Nick Smith and once again we are delighted to have Peter Wolfkamp keeping the conference moving with his top-notch MC Skills.

Communication is vital to keeping us connected, and during extreme weather events, we appreciate the ability to contact friends and family even more.  Robin McNeill, CEO, SpaceOps NZ joins us this year to talk about how and where satellites provide essential telecommunications and monitor infrastructure and terrain during and after extreme weather events and other calamities.

Frances Neeson, Engineering Geologist with LDE, who led a site-based geotechnical team for the North Canterbury NCTIR following the 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake will be presenting on the project to re-establish this nationally vital portion of New Zealand’s transport infrastructure. Her presentation is titled "Moving Mountains to Reconnect Communities".

For those flying into Nelson, take some time to explore the Nelson Airport, as we have Evzen Novak, Managing Director of Studio Pacific, who designed the new terminal with us focusing his presentation on this exciting project.

Heritage buildings are witnesses to a city's aesthetic and cultural history, helping to give people a sense of identity and connection to the past.  Dr Phillip Hartley, Senior Associate, Salmond Reed Architects has overseen major heritage repair projects for more than ten years and we are delighted to have him with us this year sharing his extensive knowledge and experience with Heritage building projects.

In hilly regions such as Wellington, accessible building sites are hard to find and the demand for cable cars has risen.  Access Automation manufactures and installs the majority of these inclined lifts in the Wellington region, and this year we have Mark Galvin, the company's owner, and director, Mark Galvin with us to tell us more about various projects, exporting locally developed technology and the mechanics behind it all.

We end the day with a presentation and site tour, led by Andrew Irving, Partner, Irving Smith Architects who will keep things local with a focus on some interesting Nelson projects.
